The sheer volume of neuroscience studies using standardized precision techniques means

that many key brain phenomena have been observed by many independent researchers

from various angles, establishing these findings with the highest confidence. The utility of

many of these key neuronal dynamics for humans has been highlighted by the most esteemed

awards, "conferring the greatest benefit on mankind". These neural mechanisms

have been demonstrated across the animal kingdom, from monkeys to rats and mice, and

the other way around, and, in most cases, including humans.

 

We call these selected fundamental measures of brain function “translational neurometrics”

because they have the power to translate knowledge about the action of a chemical in the

brain of a laboratory animal into effective therapy for humans. Translational neurometrics,

of course, do not encompass all significant neuroscience discoveries or techniques.

Instead, they include assays for measuring the effects of chemicals on specific intricate

aspects of neuronal activity, which underlie brain functions affected by key

neuropsychiatric disorders. This approach ensures highly informed predictions

about new applications of established drugs and the clinical efficacy of drug candidates.
